How long have you been with the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery?
I originally started with CT surgery during my senior practicum in the cardiac surgery OR in undergrad nursing school (2012). I then worked as a CSICU RN from 2012-2021, then as an NP 2021 to present. I started with VCU in October 2023.

Describe your role in your own words.
I am a nurse practitioner with CT surgery. I work in collaboration with all of our CT surgeons to formulate and implement a daily plan of care for our patients. On a daily basis I assess our patients, collaborate with multidisciplinary team members, prescribe medications, and interpret laboratory/radiology studies. I also am responsible for seeing new patient consults to determine if surgical intervention is needed.

Most exciting and/or challenging part of your position?
I would say that the most challenging part of my job is the time management required. Cardiothoracic surgical patients are a unique population, and you always need to be a few steps ahead. The CT surgery environment is fast-paced and requires rapid detection of deterioration and quick solutions to ensure the best outcomes possible.

What gives you the greatest satisfaction in your job?
As a nurse practitioner, I am in a unique position as not only a team member to our nursing and medical staff, but also directly to our patients. I really enjoy collaborating with our patients, as well as all team members, to ensure that we are formulating the best possible plans of care that take into account our patients' specific needs and goals. I really like to emphasize a team approach to patient care where all input is valued.

What do you do for fun outside of work?
Outside of work I enjoy cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and mountain biking
